Of course, there are plenty of websites listing Scarborough's attractions, opening times and the places every visitor is expected to see. They're useful enough, but they rarely tell you what it's actually like to spend time here.

After welcoming guests for many years, we've realised the best visits to Scarborough aren't about trying to fit everything into a packed itinerary. They're about discovering the places that make you slow down, breathe in the sea air and enjoy the Yorkshire Coast at a gentler pace.

Some of our favourite memories aren't famous landmarks at all.

They're early morning walks before the town wakes up.

Coffee overlooking the sea.

Watching fishing boats return to the harbour.

Finding a quiet bench with a view.

So, if you've got 48 hours to spend in Scarborough, here's how we'd suggest making the most of every minute.

Why South Cliff Makes the Perfect Base

One of the reasons so many guests choose Carlton House Guesthouse is our location.

South Cliff has a completely different atmosphere to many seaside resorts. Elegant Victorian buildings, wide tree-lined avenues and beautifully maintained gardens create a calm, relaxed setting that's just a short walk from everything Scarborough has to offer.

From here, you can wander down to South Bay, explore the harbour, browse the Old Town, visit the castle or spend the evening at the Spa without needing to move your car.

Afterwards, instead of returning to the bustle of the seafront, you come back to the quieter surroundings of South Cliff.

Local Tip: Before you head anywhere else, spend ten minutes walking along the Esplanade.

Day One

Start Your Day Your Way

One of the things our guests often enjoy about staying at Carlton House Guesthouse is the freedom that comes with a room-only stay.

There's no timetable.

No rush to make breakfast.

No alarm clock if you don't want one.

Whether you fancy coffee overlooking the sea, a leisurely brunch or heading straight out to explore, the day begins entirely on your terms.

If you're in the mood for excellent coffee, we'd recommend taking the short walk to the Nova Coffee trailer near Holbeck Putting Green. Grab a flat white, find a seat overlooking the coastline and simply watch Scarborough wake up.

If you're after something more substantial, The Clock Café beside the Spa has long been a favourite with both locals and visitors. With views across South Bay, it's an ideal place to enjoy breakfast, brunch or simply another coffee before your day begins.

Alternatively, if you don't mind taking the car out early, Oliver's on the Mount is well worth considering. Set high above Scarborough, it offers breakfast, lunch and some of the best views across the town, the bay and the coastline beyond.

However you choose to start your day, there's no better way to begin exploring Scarborough!

Wander Through the Italian Gardens

From the Esplanade, make your way down through the beautifully restored Italian Gardens.

Built into the cliffs more than a century ago, these elegant terraces are one of South Cliff's hidden treasures. Throughout the summer they're filled with colourful planting, carefully maintained lawns and panoramic views that seem to improve with every few steps.

Pause on one of the benches, listen to the fountain and watch the boats making their way across the bay.

Even after walking this route countless times ourselves, we still find ourselves stopping to admire the view.

Local Tip: Once you reach the bottom, turn around. Most visitors spend their time looking out to sea, but the view back towards the Italian Gardens is every bit as impressive and makes for one of the most overlooked photographs in Scarborough.

Heading back up to South Cliff later? If your legs have had enough for one day, hop on the historic South Cliff Lift. Opened in 1875, it's one of the oldest funicular railways in Britain and adds a little extra charm to the journey back to the Esplanade!

Welcome to South Bay

As you arrive on the promenade, you'll discover the Scarborough that generations of people remember from childhood holidays.

Golden sand curves around the bay.

Fishing boats move in and out of the harbour.

The castle watches over everything from the headland above.

The smell of freshly cooked fish and chips drifts through the air, and the sound of seagulls reminds you you're properly beside the sea.

Even if you don't intend to spend the whole morning on the beach, we'd encourage you to pause for a while.

It's amazing how quickly you stop checking the time.

Local Tip: If the weather's kind, kick off your shoes and paddle in the sea. It might not be the warmest water you'll ever experience, but there's something wonderfully refreshing about standing ankle-deep in the North Sea on a summer morning. Sometimes it's the simplest moments that become the best holiday memories.

Follow the Promenade to the Harbour

Rather than heading straight uphill to the castle, continue along the seafront towards the harbour.

This is where Scarborough reveals another side of its character.

It's not simply a seaside resort.

It's a working fishing town that has earned its living from the sea for centuries.

Sit for a while and you'll often see fishing boats unloading their catch, crews preparing for the next tide and, if you're lucky, one of the resident seals appearing hopefully alongside the harbour wall looking for an easy meal.

It's one of our favourite places simply to stop and watch the world go by.

Local Tip: Find a bench overlooking the harbour with an ice cream or takeaway coffee. You don't need to be doing something every minute of your break. Sometimes watching life unfold is exactly what being beside the sea is all about.

Lose Yourself in the Old Town

Behind the harbour lies one of Scarborough's most fascinating areas.

The Old Town rewards curiosity.

Its narrow streets, hidden alleyways, independent shops and historic buildings tell stories stretching back hundreds of years.

This isn't somewhere to rush through with a map in your hand.

Instead, wander wherever looks interesting.

Peek down the side streets.

Notice the old doorways.

Browse independent galleries and cafés.

Look upwards occasionally too. Some of the finest architectural details are above eye level and are easily missed if you're concentrating on where you're walking.

Guests tell us this unexpectedly becomes one of their favourite parts of Scarborough.

Climb to Scarborough Castle

If there's one attraction we'd recommend to every first-time visitor, it's Scarborough Castle.

Not simply because of its history, impressive though that is. It's because of where it stands.

Perched high on the headland between North Bay and South Bay, the castle offers some of the finest coastal views anywhere on the Yorkshire Coast.

From the battlements you can look across both bays, down to the harbour below and for miles along the coastline in both directions.

Explore the castle at your own pace. Whether you're fascinated by its history or simply there for the spectacular views, it's a place that's difficult to leave in a hurry and reminds you just how special Scarborough's location really is.

If You've Got a Little Longer

Before leaving, take the short walk to St Mary's Church.

It's one of Scarborough's oldest buildings and the final resting place of Anne Brontë. Peaceful and atmospheric, it's often much quieter than the castle itself and well worth the few extra minutes.

Fish and Chips? It Would Be Rude Not To…

No visit to the Yorkshire Coast feels quite complete without fish and chips.

Guests often ask us where we'd recommend and, truthfully, Scarborough has plenty of excellent choices.

If you're already near the harbour, The Golden Grid has earned its reputation over many years.

Freshly cooked fish and chips overlooking the water is about as traditional a Scarborough experience as you can have.

If you'd prefer something a little different, Lookout on the Pier combines wonderful marina views with locally sourced seafood and Yorkshire produce in a more contemporary setting.

On a warm summer evening it's wonderfully peaceful.

It's one of those places that reminds you why so many people fall in love with Scarborough.

Begin at Peasholm Park

Ask ten local people to recommend their favourite place in Scarborough and there's every chance Peasholm Park will feature on the list.

Opened in 1912, this much-loved park has been delighting visitors for well over a century and still feels wonderfully unspoilt, whatever the season.

Meandering pathways wind around the lake beneath mature trees, colourful planting changes throughout the year and every corner seems to offer another picture-perfect view.

If the rowing boats are available, we'd thoroughly recommend hiring one.

There's something wonderfully relaxing about drifting quietly across the lake while ducks paddle alongside and the rest of the world feels a little further away.

Local Tip: Don't just follow the main path. Cross the bridges, explore the smaller paths and take your time. Some of the loveliest views are the ones most people walk straight past.

A Scarborough Summer Tradition

If you're visiting during the summer, check whether the famous Naval Warfare display is taking place.

Generations of families have gathered beside the lake to watch miniature warships recreate dramatic sea battles complete with sound effects, explosions and plenty of nostalgia.

It's delightfully unique and one of those traditions that makes Scarborough unlike anywhere else on the Yorkshire Coast.

Follow the Coast to North Bay

From Peasholm Park it's only a gentle walk to North Bay, but the atmosphere feels completely different from South Bay.

The beach is wider.

The cliffs are more dramatic, and the bay has a noticeably more relaxed feel than South Bay.

You'll often see paddleboarders and surfers gliding across the water, walkers enjoying the promenade and photographers waiting patiently for the perfect light.

It's the sort of place where an hour has a habit of disappearing.

Local Tip: North Bay is one of the best places in Scarborough to spot dolphins and porpoises.

We can never promise they'll appear, of course, but over recent years many of our guests have returned delighted after spotting them just offshore, particularly between North Bay and Scalby Mills. If you've packed a pair of binoculars, this is the place to use them!

Walk Towards Scalby Mills

If you're enjoying the fresh sea air, keep following the Cleveland Way towards Scalby Mills.

In our opinion, it's one of the most beautiful stretches of coastline in Scarborough.

The sea stretches endlessly on one side; rugged cliffs rise on the other, and seabirds fly overhead.

It's the sort of walk that encourages conversation to slow down as everyone starts admiring the view instead.

Just before Scalby Mills you'll pass SEA LIFE Scarborough, which is worth remembering if the weather takes an unexpected turn. Even if you don't go inside, it's a useful landmark before turning back towards town.

Looking for a Change of Scene?

If you've spent most of your 48 hours enjoying Scarborough's beaches and coastline, The Mere offers something completely different.

Just a few minutes from Carlton House Guesthouse, this freshwater lake is surrounded by mature trees and open green space, making it feel surprisingly different from the bustle of the seafront.

Watch the ducks and swans drift across the water, enjoy an ice cream beneath the trees or simply spend an hour somewhere many visitors never think to explore.
